Surfing, Windsurfing & Kite Surfing
Naninya is a mecca for surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing
enthusiasts. It has private surf breaks, rights and lefts
and enjoys offshore prevailing (trade) winds.
There is an excellent viewing platform on land near the
main left hand break for spectators. A boat is available
everyday to take you to the surf. Surfing Fiji at its best!
Surf Fiji left and right handers depending upon the wind,
tide and swell direction. The prevailing winds are cross
offshore for the King Kong left. The average size is 3’
to 5’ offshore. This break has a very deep water take-off,
reducing risk of injury and is good for intermediate to
advanced surfers. There are several beginner areas depending
upon weather conditions plus a long right hand surf break
at Uatotoka (boat trip extra cost) if conditions are correct.
All other breaks are nearby.
Weather
October - February, Naninya Island has great surf breaks
that become off-shore and/or glassy when the winds decrease
and change direction.
March – September our Winter trade winds
blow offshore and it is a little cooler.
The climate is tropical and oceanic with sea
breezes making for excellent conditions. Water temperature
is ideal for surfing. Most surfers wear a rash guard for
sun protection and wind chill factor.
South-east Trade Winds prevail; day temperatures
range from 20°C to 30°C (70°F to 85°F) and
humidity is high (65% to 75%). The rainy season is
January to March throughout the country, but
Naninya Island has minimal rain with annual rainfall less
than 1,700mm.
The reliable trade winds combined with the
sheltered nature of the reef make Naninya Island an ideal
wind surfing and kite surfing location.
Snorkeling
The reef adjacent to Naninya Island is sheltered and calm,
and offers an unparalleled snorkeling experience that will
appeal to the novice and the experienced snorkeler alike.
The tide range is only 1 metre and for most of the day the
reef is easily inspected at close range in about 2 metres
of water depth.
Glide across the reef in the slow currents
to further enhance the fun look down into the cavernous
caves and trenches that dot this remarkable reef. Snorkeling
gear is provided on the island and included in the rate.
Fishing
Naninya Island is a fisherman’s heaven. It has truly
world-class deep sea and small boat fishing. Approximately
400 meters (1,200 ft) offshore is a deep trench going as
deep as 6,000 ft. There is also a sea mountain 7 miles south
that comes up to 120 ft with sides as deep as 3,000 ft.
Located just 60 nautical miles south of Fiji’s
main island Viti Levu, Kadavu is a rugged, remote and breathtakingly
beautiful island that oozes with aquatic adventure and charm.
Home to The Great Astrolabe Reef it is noted for it’s
awesome dive sites and more recently its virgin fishing
grounds privy only to a select number of charter vessels.
With raging currents, seamounts, canyons and drop-offs galore,
the chances of hooking up to marlin here is high.
Kadavu has the added bonus of exceptional
surface gamefishing for traditional species such as Blue
and Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna,
Groper, Walu, Giant Trevally, Mahi Mahi and many more. Throw
in the surf, diving, remoteness and sheer beauty and you
have a rare combination.
When you are staying at Naninya Island Resort,
the fishing grounds are right on your doorstep, only 5-10
minutes away with many large fish caught close to Cape Washington.
The boats used are open type fiberglass and because the
fish are on our doorstep, the cost to go fishing is extremely
reasonable. Much larger big game fishing boats are available
for charter. Whatever your fishing wish, we can provide
it.
SCUBA Diving
Naninya Island is Fiji’s most southerly resort and
has only recently been discovered as a world class dive
location with some of Fiji’s deepest waters, year
round outstanding visibility and fish life of a magnitude
rarely seen in today’s over exploited world. This
is still truly a pristine marine environment with wall dives
to rival any in the world offering caves, swim throughs
and amazing underwater canyons for some very exciting diving
adventures.
This area is believed
to be a major Manta Ray breeding area as they are frequently
seen with very young juveniles cruising along the spectacular
wall drop offs and rising from the azure depths to greet
our diving parties. Beautiful coral formations complete
the experience. Dive sites suit all categories of SCUBA
divers, from the novice to the serious adventure diver.
